Let Each Step, Cape Elizabeth ME, Spring 2014

Let Each Step was an installation walk set within a grouping of pine trees that abutted a vast open salt marsh. The first tree of the walk had a rope hanging from one of its branches about 20 feet up. On this rope was tied a big oak leaf with the word "Let" written on it. The next tree was about 15 feet away from the first tree. Its rope had a leaf with the word "Each" written on it. As the viewer moved from rope to rope they received more words of a phrase, which all together read "Let Each Step Move Into The Unknown". The final tree with the phrase's last word, "Unknown", written on it was at the edge of the forest. As a result when the viewer received this final word they were able to see out from the forest and onto the wide open salt marsh. About 40 feet from the forest's edge and onto the salt marsh was a circle of rocks. These rocks also had leaves tied to them, each with words written on them. These words were opposing aspects of our world. One rock had "Love" written on it and the rock on the opposite side of the circle had "Hate" written on it. Some of the of the other polarities were "Birth" and "Death", "Peace" and "War", "Suffering" and "Freedom" and on and on. At the circle's center was a mirror on the ground. The hope was to create a ceremonial or contemplative space where the viewer could see and feel themselves within these opposing entities and aspects of our lives.
